Why use a random restaurant picker?

Restaurant lists are useful when you want to compare dozens of places. PlateLuck is for the opposite moment: everyone is hungry, the group keeps scrolling, and somebody just needs to make the call. The picker deliberately returns one choice at a time so the decision can actually end.

Start with a practical radius

Five miles is a strong default for an ordinary meal because it keeps the result close enough to use. Widen the radius when you want more variety, when you live outside a dense restaurant area, or when the meal is worth a longer drive.

Filter only when the craving is real

If everyone clearly wants pizza, burgers, Mexican, Asian, Italian, breakfast, coffee or dessert, use the food filter. If the only agreement is “we are hungry,” leave the picker on Anything. Fewer rules make the random choice more surprising.

Use a veto, not another search

Reject a result when it truly will not work, then let the next one compete. The point is to avoid rebuilding the same endless directory inside your head. One or two vetoes keep the game fair without turning it back into research.

What PlateLuck uses

PlateLuck searches mapped restaurant data from OpenStreetMap. Coverage and details can vary by area, so a missing restaurant does not necessarily mean the business is closed. Always check current hours or the restaurant website before making a special trip.
